I'm not so sure that either of your statements about the MS MoSTP are correct. The 3rd edition, whihc was published 5 years ago, has largely disappeared from major bookstores. When you can find a new copiy at a specialist retailers, the cost can range from $90 to more than $250! And used copies seem to be selling for more than the original retail price of new copies. So "easily available" is questionable.
And when you say it is free, I assume that you are referring to the online version that had been available on the Microsoft developer website. But I believe that online version was taken down some months ago, which some people interpreted as an omen that MS Press may be actively working on a 4th edition and didn't want to undercut their market.
