Perhaps a word processor is not the best choice of tool for creating a
soft-format document. If it's all you have to work with, I've seen several
macro-based approaches to setting cross-reference formatting. I've never used
any of them, so I don't know if they work.

hyperlinks, but they don't update automatically.

And as I noted later, I did specifically apply a blue+underlined
style, and it didn't have any effect.
