Hi Jeanette,
You may not be aware of Adepters (Adept is an old product name for
Arbortext's XML editor now named "Arbortext Editor" ... Epic is a "newer"
old name), a mailing list dedicated to users, developers, administrators of
various Arbortext products. It is the go-to user support list for these
questions.

Here is the Adepters list info:
http://www.adepters.org/abouttheadeptersmailinglist

Note: PTC purchased Arbortext a while back and the mailing list is currently
run on servers/software owned by PTC/User an indendent (from PTC) user
organization.

I have forwarded your question to that list and will send any help that that
list produces here to techwr-l.

To your first question:
Yes, it appears that both AllowComposeStylesheetList must be set to yes and
Print Composer must be installed and licensed. We don't use Print Preview
much, so I'm not close to its workings, but Help 5038 (Previewing a
document) states those requirements. (To display Help 5038 type "Help 5038"
on the command line and press Enter. To turn on the command line if it isn't
already being displayed, choose Tools > Preferences, check Command Line, and
click OK.)

To your second question:
We work with XML not SGML so I do not know whether there is an SGML twist to
the problem you're describing. It sounds as though an author, when work on a
section is complete, is opening both the master copy (which contains all of
the sections) and the section, selecting the section to be replaced in the
master copy, copying the section in the recently updated "working" copy, and
pasting it over the section in the master copy AND that rather than
replacing, Editor is inserting the updated copy of the section before or
after the master copy of that section.

I'm not sure why this would fail. It sounds like a valid strategy to me. I
can think of three workarounds. One I know for sure would work: Use a text
editor to copy/paste the edited section into the master copy. We use Textpad
for operations like these. Watch out, though, Textpad doesn't have full
Unicode support. Textpad will munge some Unicode characters ... most of our
documents do not contain these characters so it's not a problem for us most
of the time. YMMV. These other two, I'm not sure of: It is possible to use
Editor as a text editor ... doing so may or may not avoid the problem
depending on where Editor is making a mistake. Finally, it may sidestep the
problem to open two Editor instances. If you specify "-newinstance" on
startup, Editor opens a whole new process. You may need to modify your batch
file, if you start Editor through one, to take advantage of this. You can
also edit the Arbortext Editor menu item on your Start > Programs >
Arbortext menu to start Editor with this option.

Can you delete the old section before pasting the new one? You may need to
turn of context checking before deleting, and turn it back on after pasting.
That, I guess, is a fourth possible workaround.

You don't say what version you're using. Occasionally this matters ...

Finally, if you have support, PTC should be able to figure out what's not
working.
