I'm designing the site map and so on for a new SharePoint-based
intranet site for internal support and am looking for helpful
resources.

For non-SharePoint-specific stuff, I'm using:

http://webstyleguide.com/wsg3/index.html

I found "Planning and architecture for Office SharePoint Server 2007"
parts 1 and 2 on:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262788.aspx

A few sections are relevant, but in typical MS fashion much of the
information is vague and sketchy.
