I'm about to embark on a similar project for a client. For the first
iteration, I plan to use a mind-mapping tool to brainstorm with the SMEs for
this particular industry. Most of these allow export to other file formats,
so we'll probably go to Visio and/or spreadsheet to capture additional
information.

True taxonomy software is a rather expensive undertaking. I did find one
tool from KWiz.com that claims to do tagging and taxonomy in SharePpoint
that was sort of reasonable, but in this project I don't get to recommend
tools, so I'm just providing background on tools for them to consider.

Anybody have a favorite tool for drafting hierarchical taxonomies?

The ability to drag and drop subcategories and subcategory trees from
one node to another would be helpful.

Once it's final it will probably be a Visio diagram (Web site map).

In the past, I've just used text files with tabs for subcategory
levels. It's crude but efficient.
