At my last job we used Confluence for an internal wiki. Worked fine.
Their publishing model is good provided the permissions are set up
right. If people don't have enough permissions or have too many things
can go awry. There was also a problem of a lack of editorial
oversight, so it was hard to find things, nobody knew where things
were, new content would be added but didn't get to the people who need
it. So people often fell back on email.

If you're looking at tools, compare Jive as well. Different feature
set and focus but there's some overlap. It hooks into email to capture
stuff that would otherwise be missed.

SharePoint can be beaten into submission but basically it is to Web
publishing as Word is to print publishing.
