In version control systems, "checked out" and "read-only" are normally
mutually exclusive states. Checking a file out makes it writable,
checking it in makes it read-only. You can get or update local
read-only copies of the files without checking them out.
FrameMaker will give you an error if you try to create a
cross-reference to a file that's read-only.
The big "gotcha" is that two people check out the same file and make
changes, and if it's not a text file, there's no way to merge the two
edits.
