The phrase that comes to mind is "interactive shell" (just sits there waiting for user input) vs. non-interactive shell (executes as instructed then goes away). I even found a sample page that uses those phrases so you can see them in action: http://tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/intandnonint.html
As for the memory being the second thing to go, I find that I have always had trouble remembering what I was about to... um, sorry, why did I come in here again?
