And I found that there are several sorts of hyphens in the unicode characters supported by the Consolas font (http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/font/consolas/list.htm). But I'm not sure yet how to fix things.

And when I change just the hyphen character to the more usual Courier font, the PDF is fine (meaning that one can copy/paste the hyphen just fine).

Perhaps, you might want to try Inconsolata
(http://www.levien.com/type/myfonts/inconsolata.html) or its variants
instead of Consolas. One thing I noticed with Inconsolata is that it
does not seem to darken when bolded when viewed on a display. Perhaps,
it bolds when printed? In a recent 500+ A4 page print book (on Cisco
CCNA), I used Inconsolata-dz
<http://nodnod.net/2009/feb/12/adding-straight-single-and-double-quotes-inconsola/>
and used a bold Courier New character tag for when the author desired a
bold monospace within an Inconsolata-dz paragraph.
