The plural/singular y'all controversy has been around quite awhile.
(There's even an ongoing spelling war. Lisa and I are in different
camps.)

While the "official" rule is to only use it in the plural sense, in the
wild y'all is used in every sense. And it doesn't matter whether you're
referring to a tree stump, "Y'all like to took my bumper off,
dadgummit!"

My theory has always been that it's just a thoroughly ingrained verbal
tick, like Canadians and "eh".
