Odd. My experience has always been the exact opposite. Every time I've been talked to about working on 1099 basis, the pay offer has always been the same or less than on a W2.

Generally I won't touch a 1099 job unless the pay rate is at least 15% higher than the W2 rate. The self-employment taxes can really eat your lunch come April.
