I have used Portable Apps and utilities on a USB flash drive quite a bit
over the last few years, though I haven't used it with Parallels. I use
the apps and utilities primarily for working on contract projects, as
more often than not, these days, the client gives me a locked down PC
that I am not allowed to install my own tools on. I use a USB flash
drive to give me access to my own tools.

My current Portable Apps suite is:

* Audacity Portable
* ClamWin Portable
* Dia
* Firefox
* Thunderbird
* Sunbird
* GNUCash
* InfoSelect
* InfraRecorder
* IrfanView
* JKDefrag
* Lightscreen
* MP3Tag
* Notepad++
* Openoffice
* Paint Shop Pro 7
* SpyDLL Remover
* timeEdition
* Total Commander

though this tends to change a little depending on my needs for the contract.

I have used a variety of different brands of drive over the last few
years. I have used a lot of Kingston and Sandisk, as they tend to be
the cheapest drives. Never had any troubles with any of them and the
only reason I have upgraded is to get more space. Currently, I am using
a 16GB Sandisk. It works, I like it, it seems to like me (man I hope I
didn't jinx things. . . :-) ). In my experience, almost all drives
behave the same. Access time is about the same, durability is usually
pretty good (I still use a 256MB stick that I worked with about 5 years
ago), so I don't fuss too much about the actual hardware. I tend to buy
whatever is on sale, in the size I want at the local computer shop.

One think I do a lot of is back the flash drive up quite a bit. There
are lots of ways to do this and Potrable Apps has a back up selection
from the menu, so you should be covered.

If you want to chat more, let me know.

Cheers

Carter
