FM Import by Reference from Database

Hi, all. 

My current client stores all document source files in a Windows Explorer directory structure. Many figures are stored in multiple locations and many are named things like "img21.jpg" and "page14.jpg." We figure a database would eliminate the duplication of storage and enable us to provide descriptive metadata to identify each figure accurately.

We import all figures by reference into FrameMaker documents. Is it possible to import a figure by reference into a FrameMaker file from a database? Can you point to a db directory the way you would to a regular Windows Explorer directory?

The minute we need to pull figures *out* of the db in order to use them, we're back to the duplicate storage problem again.
