I often get asked by Tech Writing students about what good "technical writing" books there are out there. There are many, and they're often expensive...so I rarely have a great title to suggest.
Until now!
I recently found a copy of Modern Technical Writing, published in 1975, and written by Theodore A. Sherman and Simon S. Johnson.
A quick search on abebooks.com showed me that there are several copies of this available, all for roughly the price I paid: $1.00. You can't beat that.
The concepts are all mostly relevant in 2010, though I wouldn't recommend putting my birthday and marital status on my resume, as this book suggests on page 391. There's even a handy grammar primer in the back.
I picked it up not knowing what to expect. So far, the book seems to work as a good intro on how to write tech docs.
