I think Jan nailed it with "insecurity." And you can run into that
level of insecurity in any job, not just technical writing.

Over the weekend I started to write about an insecure former
co-worker. But I decided that I'd rather not post my thoughts about
them on the internet, because if they see the post I don't want to
subject my former coworkers to having to listen to them.

All I'll say is that when someone is insecure, you just have to accept
that the insecurity is "their problem" and don't let them make it into
"your problem." Because it's NOT your problem.
