For technical writing, know your subject. REALLY know your subject. Know more of your subject than you intend to document. Even though you're only documenting the user's interface to the product, you need to know why the interface choices were made, what limitations they imply, and what dependencies drive them. Only then can you make choices based on who, what, and why.
