TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
If the password is set in the BIOS, virtually all desktops let you reset
the password by pulling a button battery on the mainboard. (With some,
you must also short two pins, which would be documented in the manual or
in the maker's knowledge base.) I don't know whether this battery is
accessible in many laptops, but it's worth checking out.
The free "Ultimate Boot CD" (www.ultimatebootcd.com) has password
recovery features and much more.
For a Windows password, Cain & Abel (www.oxid.it) is free and effective,
though not exactly intuitive. Note that this program will trigger most
anti-malware tools, so you'll need to whitelist it before use. Some
anti-malware tools will quarantine it immediately on download. Ignore
the false positive - the program is NOT malware.
Windows Password Key is probably the easiest to use
(www.lostwindowspassword.com) and costs about $20.
BackTrack and its ilk would be major overkill, IMO.
