Perhaps you're getting font substitutions for some other font altogether?
To check, the command sequence (in XP Classic view, it might be different
for the regular XP view) is Tools > Options > Compatibility Tab > Font
Substitution...

And if it's a default para font that's based on Normal, it may be that the
Normal style in the Normal.dot is Verdana.
