The folks at WorldLabel have a review of the free Fontmatrix program,
which works on Windows and Linux (and, they say, there is a somewhat
buggy version for the Mac). It allows you to view, select, and
activate or deactivate fonts on your system, as well as to compare
various ones in numerous ways.

The review is at
<http://blog.worldlabel.com/2010/become-a-typeface-pro-with-fontmatrix.html>

It may meet your needs--if nothing else, allowing you to turn off
unused fonts on your system may offer you a performance boost.
