RE: "back" in MS Word

I'm not sure that the following info will do it exactly; I think the intent
is to help navigate through a Word doc while you're authoring it, not
necessarily create Back links in the final (presumably PDF) version.  But
perhaps it's applicable, and if not it's still useful and somewhat related
:-).  It's from an STC Lone Writers thread I saved, from March 8, 2010,

I have a great deal of experience with this feature [Jump Back in Word
2003]. I have a very, very,
very large Word doc with many, many bookmarks in it and many hyperlinks to
those bookmarks. I typically navigate either by clicking hyperlinks and
using the Back/Forward buttons, or using the Shift+Ctrl+F5 dialog to jump to
a bookmark.
 
In my experience, I can navigate using the Back and Forward buttons
regardless of whether I take actions such as adding or deleting text or even
inserting a picture between jumps. I just confirmed this in Word 2000,
Word 2003, and Word 2007.
 
These aspects of this feature weren't intuitive to me:
 
* The Back/Forward history does not include locations that you navigate to
using the Shift+Ctrl+F5 dialog. (It makes sense to me that it doesn't
include locations that I just scroll to, or that I reach by searching.)
If you are at A and click a link to B, then Back goes to A. If you are
at A and click a link to B and then jump (using the dialog) to C, then Back
still goes to A.
 
* There is a separate Back/Forward history for each window into a given
document. If you click around in a document and then spawn a new window
into that document (Alt+W, N in normal Word; ghod knows how in Word 2007),
the new window has no Back/Forward history.
 
* The keyboard shortcuts for Back and Forward are Alt+LArrow and
Alt+RArrow.
