Templates shared on a file server cause problems because they cannot
be edited or replaced when someone has a document open that is based
on them. To solve this problem, I built a batch file that copies the
shared folder copy into their %APPDATA% locations of my choosing. When
I update my copies of the files, I run a batch file that overwrites
the shared copies from my copies. Then I advise the users to update
theirs. After I get the teams used to this system flow, I will ask IT
to set up an automatic script that copies these files to a user's
workstation immediately upon logging in if the shared copy is of a
later date than the user's.
You could probably use the same technique for document building blocks as well.
