Dana,

I recently bought a netbook rated at 11 hours on a charge, and a laptop
rated at 12 hours (realistically, more like 8 and 9, it appears so far).
However, either one is far more cumbersome than the ebook reader.

If you haven't seen the free Calibre ebook application, you should check it
out. It supports conversion to and from most of the formats used by ebook
readers, and also offers library management as well as the ability to read
ebook texts of many formats on your computer.

As for the Kindle, my Asus UL30 came with the Kindle computer app
pre-installed, which was the first thing I removed. I don't like being
locked into a proprietary format, whether on the computer or on a reader.
While larger screens for ebook readers are nice, the Opus is easy to fit
into a pocket and weighs less than six ounces--and it, too, has several
weeks of battery life as well as a removable/replaceable battery when the
time comes. So far, I have had little problem with format variations--but
then again, I've only had it for a bit less than two weeks. I bought one for
my wife as well, and she is delighted with it. She uses it at home, but also
takes it with her for her long hospital shifts to use between patients. She
can slip it easily into the pocket of her lab coat. (Ira is an
anesthesiologist here in Ukraine, and she frequently works 24-hour shifts at
an OB/GYN hospital here in Donetsk. Thus, she may be insanely busy for some
hours and then have many hours of little or no activity when she's doing
anesthesia for operations.)

It should be obvious, too, that among my criteria was to find a reader that
fully supports Cyrillic. Many do not.

For rather obvious reasons, outside the U.S. the Kindle is not popular.
