I'm replying from a Linux machine and Firefox browser. Open Office
is in another window. These work fine for me.

My job mainly involves editing academic papers. Most of them come
to me as TeX files (an open source system) which some journals
require. If you need complex math, Word is not even close to TeX.
Framemaker might be; I'm out of date on that.

I do get some Word files and edit nearly all of them with OO.

The only exception I've had was a fairly complex format. Two
columns, many tables, formulae, ... It was possible to edit the
text with OO, but the screen formatting was awful. Using Word
for that one made it much easier.

I also do some teaching. Creating slides with OO and using them
on classroom Windows boxes works fine for m. My slides are
nearly all simple text, though. I'm not sure how well this would
work with complex layouts or extensive graphics.
