It's a tax designation in the US:
- Full-time employees get paid through W-2, with taxes taken out and
(usually) benefits.
- Consultants/contractors get paid through 1099, and no taxes are
taken out and no benefits are included. Consultants typically pay
quarterly taxes to the government (like an employer), based on their
total income for the quarter.
Like Laura, I rarely see payments within 30 days...more like 45 days.
