Sorry for being late to the party.
My advice to someone returning to the workforce would be to look at oDesk.
Although the pay is generally low, there are opportunities to grow and build
a reputation.

Income is always useful, particularly since we have two kids in college. It
is not imperative, however, and if a $15 or $20 short-term contract came my
way, I'd jump at it, just for the experience and to get back into the field.
