Bobbi,

Reader's Advanced Search allows someone to search PDFs in a particular folder (My Documents by default). The files don't have to be open; Reader will open them as you select results.

Another option, if you have Acrobat Pro 9 or above, is to create a Portfolio of the files you want to group together. This is pretty easy to do; go to File > Create Portfolio and drag the PDFs (actually, they don't even have to be PDFs--Office docs and graphics of all sort can be included) into the window.

When you open the portfolio in Reader, you get the option to Search the Entire Portfolio (though it's not the default, and I don't think there's any way to change that).

Hope this helps.

Mike McCallister

Subject: Searching across multiple pdf files

Good morning Tech Whirlers -

I have googled the answer to this question but I felt those with experience
may be able to offer me their experiential knowledge.
The situation is: users need to locate information spread across multiple
pdfs.

Is it possible to search across multiple pdf files using Adobe Reader? And
if so, do all the pdf files need to be open? Does this function work with
Adobe Acrobat?
Another possible solution would be to merge the TOCs of the pdfs. Does
anyone know if this is possible?

Any insights appreciated.

Bobbi
