I don't think the tri pane look is going away. Only the use of frames.
Systems need to be more elegant to represent tri pane help in a single
browser window. This system would need to be able to interpret a URL
to show the correct subnavigation when users send URLs to individual
topics.
Also, advances are being made in the area of feedback, tracking,
context awareness, and use of rich media to supplement text
instructions.
This all falls under the principle of layering information to support
multiple audiences.
Haha! The irony I'd I've never written a help system.
