I have a no-longer-new VIAO with a max resolution of 1280x800, and a
1920X1080 widescreen Viewsonic. I keep Outlook and my e-mail or various
reference material, like a directory of figures, on the VIAO on the left,
and have two full-page Word or other application windows side-by-side on the
Viewsonic, and work at a distance where I move my head very little. I do
have a separate full-size keyboard on an ergonomic-height pull-out drawer,
which makes a big difference from using the laptop keyboard while looking at
the wide screen.
I have no-line trifocals, so the middle section works well for viewing the
screen. My husband has traditional bifocals, and keeps a pair of
single-vision glasses for computer use. We all do what works for us.
