Absolutely. For me, the level of interruption provided by IM is virtually non-existent. It doesn't derail my train of thought, and there's no requirement for me to respond right away, even if my client says that I'm "available." A phone call is an interruption, as is walking over to talk to me. IM says "hey, I need to talk to you when you have a minute." Likewise, it lets me ping someone to say "hey, I have a question."

It's also indispensable when testing software or troubleshooting a problem. We use it during our service incidents as a primary means of communication between all parties. E-mail has a tremendous delay when sending information back and forth, whereas for me, the instant nature of IM is practically as good as sitting in the same room.
