Word 7 fields don't update

All of a sudden my Word 7 fields won't update when I press F9. For that matter, shift+F3 doesn't change case on a word, so it seems that a lot of my special function keys aren't working.

Does anyone know why this would be so? and how can I fix it?

failing that, is there a menu option or toolbar option to force updating the fields?
