I suspect that mastering sentence diagramming had a lot to do with making
many of us good writers. I keep it in my out-of-sight toolbox for untangling
really indecipherable input, especially form ESL writers. Mental
reorganization automatically handles most normal editing or text clean-up
jobs, but I do rely on actual paper and pen diagramming once in a great
while. I got a grin out of someone's attempt to diagram Sarah Palin's
pronouncements during the last presidential election.
