FWIW, I googled diversified adaptation after I posted, and came across quite a few entries. It would appear that the term is relatively common in the discussion of evolution.

Given that, I would not change the wording at all (other than herbivorous animals to "plant-eating animals ;-) . Note to Lauren -- no need to go all serious on me, it's a JOKE!).

Rather than "herbivorous animals", I might use "herbivores" (isn't herbivorous animal somewhat redundant?), or why not just say "plant-eating animals".
