I definitely need to do more reading, as Dossy nicely pointed out.
I don't think volunteering for open source doc is in my immediate future, too overloaded with other obligations. I guess reading is the way to go, with the occasional webinar to help out.
I'm happy to report that I do have a flip phone, devoted exclusively to the needs of my 83-year-old mother. My plan is for 25 minutes per month for $16.00 per month. That's how I roll ...

Ars Technica (http://arstechnica.com/) is for the more advanced, but if you're a good reader and a quick learner, it will get you up to speed on the cutting edge of stuff.
I'd recommend reading both each day. Bit like learning a foreign language, at first it'll make no sense, but after a few months you'll be telling other people stuff they didn't know.... :-)
