When I first joined the STC I think my membership dues were something
in the neighborhood of $145. Last year, to get the same level of
membership (chapter membership, SIG memberships, print Intercom) would
have cost me something in the neighborhood of $350.
Honestly, there were never that many jobs listed in the local job
bank. The salary data used to be useful, but then they started
charging for detailed information (and I found out about the Writer's
UI salary survey, which is still free). And while our local chapter
is pretty active, the meeting topics really only pulled me in once or
twice a year. The best part of the STC for me has been the mailing
lists. And I've got alternate (free) choices there too. Add that to
the fact that my local chapter meetings have been much less useful to
my career than local Agile groups that are sponsored, and thus free...
*shrugs*
I hung in as long as I could, but the ROI just kep diminishing as the
prices kept going up.
