Be aware that "Skills" are a relatively new (~6 months old) feature, and apparently still officially in beta (http://www.linkedin.com/skills/?trk=skills-global-nav). I don't know what's generating the year-over-year report (that would be interesting to know), but a look at the iPhone Skill page (http://www.linkedin.com/skills/skill/iPhone?trk=skills-hp) suggests (based on the Size graph over on the right side) that it's based on people claiming that skill.

I wouldn't get especially worked up over any down-trending numbers, at least at this point. I notice a Send Feedback button that might get listened to, BTW.

Hi, everyone.

I got an email today from Linked-In prompting me to add skills to my profile. I was unaware of a "skills" listing and will look into it before I start clicking all these "Add Skill" buttons.

HOWEVER . . . LinkedIn provides tells you how many people have this skill in their resume and then adds a percentage "Year Over Year." They don't say what: the number of people specifying this skill in LinkedIn? The number of searches looking for this skill? I'm guessing it's the number of resumes specifying the skill.

Here are the skills Linked-In proposes for me, the number of people with that skill, and their year-over-year outlook:

Technical writing: 112 K users, -4%
Documentation: 1 M, -7%
Adobe Acrobat: 93.6 K, -10%
Writing: 1.4 M, + 5%
Word: 854 K, -7%
HTML: 639 K, -1%
XML: 369K, -9%
FrameMaker: 12.4 K, -16%
Editing: 778 K, 0%
Online Help: 16.9 K, -15%

Hmmm. What's wrong with this picture?
