I think it's definitely a "use it or lose it" skill. Assuming the skill is
developed and used in the first place. But for most of us, K-12 +
undergrad is where we spent the majority of our time as young people
developing and using that skill, and once out of an environment where
proper use is mandatory the skills will begin to erode if not used. So I
think there is a possibility that loosening requirements while people are
still IN school may just start the erosion process earlier for some.
