I appreciate that point of view, Steven. I didn't say Lion was of no value to anyone. Really what I'm complaining about is the lack of an option to turn these features off, which would clearly be beneficial for a large number of users.

BTW, on the point of security, apart from the fact that the Recovery partition makes login passwords irrelevant on Lion (since even a child can bypass them with very little knowledge), another largely unpublished difference between Lion and Snow Leopard is the 'secure erase' feature. Snow Leopard allowed a user to run a 35-pass erase on a disk. Lion's maximum is only a 7-pass erase.

And if any of you guys out there are dealing with sensitive data, avoid SSDs at all costs, no matter what system you're using (more info here: http://nvsl.ucsd.edu/sanitize/).

That said, I find the scenarios in which the save-everything behavior causes problems far fetched, and much less likely than the scenario in which you lose work that you didn't want to lose. Whether it happens because of a power failure, a crash, a freeze, a Pepsi Syndrome, or an hour of frenzied writing without remembering to save, losing work is bad, and it is not uncommon.
