One other "feature" to be aware of: I was given a Kindle (basic model)
this holiday season as a gift. If you pay the basic price, it displays
ads when not in use (and even when powered off). These are local ads. If
you pay $30 more, or you pay $30 after the fact, you can get an ad-free
experience.

Initially, I was bothered by the ads. I used Google to find a hack to
remove them. Great -- then when it would have shown an ad, it now showed
one of a series of images having to do with writing (like a group of
pencils).

Then, I accepted an update from 4.0 of the Kindle software to 4.0.1. Now
the hack seems to have been countered -- at least the set of instructions
that users now say will remove the ads again -- is considerably longer.
I've not gotten bothered enough to try following the new instructions.

My advice -- if someone GIVES you a Kindle that is ad-supported, pay the
additional ransom to get the ads removed.
