I encourage people sending me input to not self-edit or self-organize and just let it pour out, stream-of-consciousness style, then leave it to me to organize and prune out duplications, excess verbiage, information that goes off-topic for the document, etc., and correct grammar and spelling. When everybody knows that what they send in is going to be rearranged and trimmed and nobody is spending a lot of time and effort trying to "perfect" their input, egos don't get bruised.

It also helps to know enough about the product under development to be able to ask for input about smaller bits and pieces rather than whole processes and procedures.
