It would be structured, topic-based documents with the topics stored in or
linked to a searchable knowledge database. XML and DITA are the currently
preferred format flavors, but there's no reason why it couldn't be
something else. I've done it in the past with alternate FM or Word
sections in FM books or Word master documents. What's important is the
ability to swap out standard topics for customized versions and to sort all
the stored custom versions by variation so you don't end up with multiple
"custom" versions that are identical except for their file names.
