I suspect that the article was thinking more of contract writers who primarily work from home and just have one contact person with the client.

It is very hard to be successful at this profession if you hide in your cubicle and refuse to talk to people. How can you possibly gather information if you don't like people? Most of my day is spent asking questions, interviewing people and gathering information. Only about 20% is actually writing the manuals..
