I thought about this poll for a while, then realized that I've been both for most of my techpubs working life, most of the time both at the same time, and as a result am really not sure exactly where to draw the line between the two. A "technical communicator" who doesn't incorporate marketing thinking into manuals and a marcom person who doesn't have a good grounding in the technical/instructional/training issues both seem to me like specialists who would have a hard time cutting it in the mostly many-hats generalist environments I've spent the past 20 years or so working in.
