Re: Technical Writing to Quality Management - feasable ?
Does anyone out there have experience moving from a technical writing role to a Quality Management role ?
...
Any pearls of wisdom to share ?
My wife's a quality engineer, as in chemical processes, rather than software quality. She suggests that a clear management structure is crucial. Otherwise you become the fall guy. One boss tells you, "Stick to the standards," while another says, "Approve it for shipment, or we'll find someone who will." You cannot win that war.
It does not hurt to become aware of W. Edwards Deming, or of Kaoru Ishikawa.
In the manufacturing industries it is not uncommon for management to buy into the latest "flavor of the month" for handling quality. Some new consultant with a new scheme is brought in. Everyone takes the required course. Nothing changes, but that's all for the good, because the next flavor of the month reveals the previous flavor to be worthless.
I'm not sure just how this would map onto SQA, because the parameters are quite different, but you've probably already seen some of the resentment that can happen when writing about someone's precious software and discovering that it is broken. Try to figure out a way to fix broken designs before they become broken implementations.
