Re: Deprecated (was When is it too much information?)
The term "deprecated" was used in American National Standards Institute programming language standards in the 1980s. Certainly the COBOL standard noted some deprecated features.
The term is perfect for documentation read by programmers, but users are not likely to understand it. I agree with everyone who has said that if it is deprecated, then do not discuss it in user documentation. Yehoshua (my apologies for using his last name and not first) mentioned a case where a feature is deprecated, in this case screen text, and the change may confuse users, so something should be noted in the change documentation. Users do not often know what "deprecated" means. User documentation should say what the feature or change means to the user in simple terms with language that the user, rather than the programmer, users.
