Speaking for myself alone: I find instrumental music (string quartets, jazz, classical piano) useful for concentration as it seems to attract the attention of some component of my brain so I can concentrate better. Vocals are too distracting, and working without music leaves me too open to ambient distractions.
When I was still programming I was much more productive while listening to music than I was without it.
