We make heavy use of abbreviations and categories, mainly. Every
organization would have to come up with its own best system for those,
but I can give a sampling:

Abbreviations:
* Product names (e.g., EXa, EXb, EXp)
* GUI interface element designations (e.g., BUT, ICO, WIN, TAB, DIA)
* Common terms (e.g., mgr, maint)

Categories:
* Audience domain (e.g., OPER, ADMIN)
* HW v SW (i.e., we have images relating to both, for most products)

That, and we are diligent about using underscores for spaces and dashes
for file name element dividers. NOTHING else in a file name, both for
compatibility and to avoid dumb-ass-looking URLs filled with percentage
signs to ASCII-ify invalid characters. Ugh, I hate it when a web-based
file has those (and HTML Help counts, though it's harder to 'see' the
file names in a Help viewer).

Example:
EXa--SW--3-7-4--DIA--Set_User_PW--click_OK.png

...is a screen shot of the "Set User PassWord" DIAlog box in v3.7.4
software on (a)ll EXPress products, showing an OS cursor (click)ing OK.

Further, from the "click_OK", I can presume that there's other info in
the dialog, which was populated during earlier steps (i.e., this image
is for the final step).

HTH;
David
