For me, the answer is to get closer to the code base.
The only real barrier is the the `geek-fear', but once that is overcome,
within a surprisingly short period of time, you begin to experience the
ability to tweak your work to a far better standard that is simply not
possible through any proprietary interface.

And it really doesn't take all that long to get on top of.
Predominantly you are looking at open standards, freely available from
the W3C site, for example, and even certifications from the same source.
