I've seen things like this happen in Word many times. It's like an area of
the binary code behind the words gets corrupted, and then it persists until
you do something to manually force a rewrite of that area. It seems to be
tied to particular areas in the document. Sometimes I've had to manually
recreate paragraphs above or below the trouble spot, and then delete the
trouble spot content. I have no idea why this kind of thing happens, but
Word is well known to occasionally have spells like this. It seems to me
that Word has invisible limits on document size and complexity, and if
those are exceeded it starts hiccupping. And this isn't unique to Word
2010; I've seen it in every version I've ever used.

Be glad it's just a few words. Several times I've had Word decide to throw
away formatting, and the only way I could fix it was to copy the text to a
new file and then manually reapply formatting to everything in the new
file. With a 385-page document, that gets real old real fast.
