Effective circulation of one's ideas, perhaps? When you publish on
LinkedIn, not only do your connections get an item in their stream saying
you've posted, it seems there's also a fair bit of traffic from search or
the LinkedIn recommendations (not necessarily from connections) at the top
of the stream.
When I published something on LinkedIn, it got quite a few views, whereas
my blog posts don't generally get so many (mostly because I don't post
regularly and hardly do any promotion!)
Regarding Erika's question on who gets this feature, LinkedIn are rolling
it out gradually. I think they may use some internal criteria to determine
who gets the invitations, such as number of connections or amount of
activity.
