Re: Questions about the work day for the Whirlers

Working on the other coast, where traffic can be equally horrific, I used
to get up between 3:30-4AM so I could get my commute down to 45 minutes (in
almost no traffic). If I left home at any time between 6-9AM, it was
*guaranteed
*that my commute would doubleâeven triple in light rain or snow. I could
have started my work day later, such as at 10AM, but then I would have had
to park in the next city!

In those dark days, I left work at 3PM unless an afternoon meeting required
my attendance (rare). The 1+ hour I "gave away" to the company each day
became my learning time. I'd read a book on Safari Online or work through a
class on Lynda.com or similar sites.

At my current job, my commute is 12 minutes one way (15-20 in bad
traffic/weather). I now arrive at the office at 8AM, and leave by 4PM. I
can also work at home as often as I like, but I enjoy office dynamics so I
generally prefer to come in. Work/life balance is vastly improved, so I
hope I can hang onto this for a while. I am sure I'll end up with a bad
commute again at some future point in my career. The best jobs tend to be
in the city.
